Mentoring: Getting Started

An introduction to our mentoring programme

Mentoring

What is mentoring?

In 2024, the Development and Alumni Office introduced a new community website for OKS, current and former parents, staff and 6th form pupils at King's. As part of the website, we expanded our careers offering by establishing a mentoring programme. All members of the community are able to get involved as mentors or mentees.

The main responsibility of our mentors is to respond to any queries submitted via the mentoring page on our website. Queries may be one-off requests (for example, a CV review) or a longer-term mentoring agreement.

Mentees can match themselves with a mentor by browsing the mentor list, or refer to the Development and Alumni Office to be referred.

Who are the mentors?

Mentors are volunteers and include different members of the King's community including: OKS, former and current parents and staff.

You can view our mentors here.

What can mentors help with?

The following help categories are currently available:

  • CV review
  • General career advice and guidance
  • Industry and sector specific guidance
  • Interview prep and practice
  • Setting up a business
  • Career change

If your question does not fit into one of these categories, please select the 'general career advice and guidance' option.

Mentor requirements

Everyone has a different experience with their own individual and unique career path. Anyone from the King's Association can become a mentor, but we especially welcome mentors who have a experience and expertise in offering careers advice and guidance. Recruiters are also welcome, as they can offer advice and tips based on their experience in interviewing, looking at CVs and application processes.

We have highlighted the following qualities that we think make a great mentor:

  • Inspiring
  • Knowledgable
  • Confident
  • Patient
  • Well connected
  • Empathy
  • Effective communicator

How do I become a mentor?

We are always looking for new mentors and volunteers! If you are able to offer your time to answer occasional questions from OKS, please sign up as a volunteer mentor.

1) At the top right corner of your web page, click the icon with a person (or your profile photo if you have uploaded one):

2) Scroll down to 'Mentoring" and click the grey cog icon on the right:

Here, you can opt in or out of mentoring at any time. You can also select areas that you are able to help with.

If you would like more information on being a mentor, you can contact the Development and Alumni Office.
