Daisy Rex (LX 2016-21 and Former Captain of School) has embarked on the epic challenge of trekking across Nepals' mighty Himalayas, West to East, on the Great Himalaya Trail (high route).
This adventure includes traversing 1700km of Nepal's magnificent mountains, tackling 15 over 5000m passes and some of the worlds more remote and unforgiving terrain. Daisy will be staying in a mix of local home stays, tea houses, and her own trusty tent. She'll be carrying all her kit and aims to cross border-to-border in under 90 days (the trek usually takes 120-150 days).
Through taking on this challenge, Daisy is raising money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The GWT work incredibly hard to ensure that Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity. This is achieved primarily through the provision of financial, medical and community aid in Nepal. GWT operate through 20 Area Welfare Centres spread across traditional Gurkha recruiting areas. In the UK, in conjunction with other service charities and government bodies GWT offer advice and support to help the thousands of retired Gurkhas and their families.
Daisy says:
"I have been extremely fortunate to grow up amongst the Gurkha pariwar including now living in Kathmandu. Supporting all the life changing and essential work that the GWT do is therefore hugely important to me and will certainly be the motivation on those tougher high altitude passes and throughout!
I am hugely excited to attempt such a challenge but most importantly cannot wait to be amongst the magnificent people and hills of Nepal for the next few months as well as raise some money for such an important charity."
As of Monday 13 October, Daisy is on day 71 of the trek and has contacted the Development Office to share her exciting news. Many OKS and teachers have already contributed, but she hopes to reach out to the wider King’s community for further support. If you'd like to support Daisy, you can make a donation or leave a message on her JustGiving page here.
Good luck Daisy - we can't wait to hear further updates as you near the end of your trek!
