On Saturday 11 January 2025, 94 OKS, staff, parents, and pupils came together to celebrate rowing at King’s at the annual Boat Club Dinner. The dinner came after a full day of rowing activities at the School boat house. Despite the cold weather and a few patches of ice, pupils and Pilgrims boat club members (OKS) enjoyed a paddle at Westbere. It was especially good to get together some OKS for a paddle, who boated in an Eight and a Double.
After the delicious main course, Luke Reiser (new Head of Rowing) kicked off speeches by talking about his rowing career so far and thanking everyone for their support since taking up his role at King’s in 2024. Luke, alongside rowing coaches Eilidh, Harry, Toby and Ryan, presented numerous rowing awards to pupils for their hard work and achievements over the 2024 season. Then it was time to hear from pupils Elisabeth (6a) and Isak (6a), who gave a humorous speech about what makes a rower, and their funny stories from the lakes.
Next, guest speaker Jacob Dawson, was introduced. Jacob is an Olympic and World Champion rower who represents Great Britain, and most recently won gold in the men’s eight at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He spoke about his incredible journey to become an Olympic champion, including personal setbacks and the importance of comradery in your crew. Elisabeth and Daniel asked questions, interview style, and then invited questions from the floor. We were incredibly lucky to be joined Jacob and he even brought along his Olympic gold medal for pupils to have a look at and wear.
As the night came to a close, pupils returned to the main school for a social, whilst OKS, parents and staff had the chance to catch up with each other and meet new friends. It was a fantastic evening, filled with community spirit and pride. It is clear to see why rowing is such a popular sport at King’s!
