Amidst a golden age for Rugby at the School, the 1963/64 XV remain legends of King’s Sport. Their achievements include an unbeaten record; winning the final of the Public Schools’ seven-a-side competition by the record margin of 30-0; and a write-up in The Times proclaiming ‘….they probably gave a finer exhibition than has ever been shown by any other English school in the history of the tournament’.
60 years on, the team came together to share their memories of that wonderful season in ‘A Golden Age: The King’s Canterbury Rugby XV of 1963/64’. Spearheaded by John Norwood (WL 1960-64), the project was a huge success and proceeds from the book sales have been generously donated to support the next generation of Rugby players at the School.
Directed by Mat Lister, Head of Rugby, this generosity will now enable outstanding Strength and Conditioning Training to be offered to our Rugby pupils from this term. This training will support the development of each and every one of our players in a way previously not possible. It will also enable our team to make the most of the Rugby Tour to South Africa this summer!
We are incredibly grateful to John and the 1963/64 XV, as well as their collaborators (Malcolm Campbell, Hilary Davies, Michael Dover, Peter Henderson and Jenny Jackson) for making this possible. Thank you so much for your support!
What’s in a Tour?
The upcoming Rugby Tour to South Africa presents us with a unique opportunity to provide our pupils with life-changing experiences, unforgettable memories, and a valuable sense of perspective. The tour will consist of matches against local teams, as well as visits to historic landmarks such as Robben Island. Our students will also be running a full-day rugby camp for the local Kathleen Murray Primary School in the rural township of Grabouw. To make the camp a success, our pupils will be completing a RFU coaching and refereeing qualification, ensuring they have the skills and experience to deliver an exceptional experience.
