Q&A: James Green, New House Housemaster and King's Physics Teacher

5 questions with James Green

James Green is a Physics Teacher and New House Housemaster at King's. He joined the School in 2022 and in September 2025, he became Housemaster of the latest (and 17th!) house at King's - New House.

Hi James! Tell us a little about yourself and your life before King’s

I was born in Kent and have family in Canterbury, but I was at school at King’s Rochester and was a chorister in the Cathedral there. I moved up to London for University and studied Physics at King’s College London. After completing my Masters, I worked in Software Development in the Energy Industry for 5 years. I then retrained as a teacher in London, before returning to Kent in 2020 to take a job at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys. I joined King’s in January 2022. My wife, Jessica, also works at King’s over at the International College, and we welcomed our daughter Annabelle on New Years Day 2024.

Congratulations on your New House Housemaster Position! What have you enjoyed about the role so far?

Many thanks! Setting up a house from scratch is an amazing opportunity to start with a fresh slate. Working with the pupils to develop that house ethos is incredibly rewarding and we have an absolutely fantastic first cohort. I was particularly impressed by their efforts in House Song this year, to perform so well in front of the whole school when only a handful of pupils had any experience of the competition demonstrated exactly the attitude you want from your founding students. We have a great staff team behind us as well, particularly Miss Young, our wonderful PCA who does a superb job in managing so many aspects of House life.

What is your favourite memory of King’s?

The Carol Service each year is always a real highlight. Coming together as a school after what is often the most challenging term and ending with such an atmospheric service in a beautiful setting is always very special.

What do you do in your spare time?

I have always been a keen choral singer, and enjoy singing with the school ensembles, as well as depping with the Cathedral choirs at both Canterbury and Rochester when regular singers are absent. I have also made my own wine in the past, though that has taken a bit of a back seat after a busy couple of years!

What is at the top of your bucket list?

As Annabelle grows up, we would love to do more travelling and attend an Ashes match in Australia is probably top of my list!
