David Gower OBE (LN 1970-75), former England cricket capatain, is auctioning a collection of memorabilia from his cricket career. Widely regarded as one of the most elegant left-handed batsmen of his era, Gower amassed 8,231 runs in test cricket and became a celebrated figure both on and off the field. His career took him across the globe, and he later became a renowned broadcaster.
During his time at King's, Gower joined the School cricket First XI aged only 14, and soon became Captain. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Gower said:
I went to boarding school at eight, and I absolutely thrived. I won a scholarship to a school in Canterbury where my dad had once been head boy, and I loved the strong sense of camaraderie. Being good at sport gained me instant popularity, and I went on to become the captain of the cricket team. School was a lifeline for me.
The auction features 114 rare items from his cricket career including: his MCC & England Touring Cap, Allan Border's Australia Test Match Jumper, and Gower's England V West Indies Lord's 1988 Cricket Bat signed by Viv Richards, Malcolm Marshall, Courtney Walsh, Graham Gooch, and David Gower.
The auction will take place online on eBay UK, from Monday 7 July to Thursday 17 July.
