On Wednesday 25 June, Sarah Knight (LX/JR 1991-96) and Jen Meaking (née Stubbings, LX 1991-96) returned to King's to unveil a purple plaque.
The plaque was awarded to Sarah as part of her prestigious Women in Innovation Award earlier this year, which marks her achievement as CEO and Founder of The Allergy Team. Sarah and Jen met at King's and launched the The Allergy Team in 2020 after discussing the challenges of living with allergies on holiday. The Allergy Team provide support information and training for schools and institutions dealing with allergies.
A Purple Plaque is a commemorative sign dedicated to honouring the achievements of remarkable women who have made significant contributions to society, culture, politics, or public life. The initiative aims to address the historic underrepresentation of women in public memorials - currently only 15% of blue plaques in London celebrate the achievements of women.
To start the day, Sarah and Jen spoke to pupils about their experiences at King’s and their journeys since leaving. A panel of our purples had prepared a fantastic range of questions from “What were you like at school?” to “What’s a common myth about entrepreneurship that drives you mad?” Sarah and Jen answered each one with honesty, leaving the audience both informed and inspired.
After a quick tour around the School and tea with pupils, the plaque was then unveiled at Jervis House.
Thank you, Sarah and Jen, for returning to King's, and congratulations on receiving the Purple Plaque. We hope it will inspire pupils, staff, and visitors for many years to come!
