These Are Not Gentle People

Presented by Andrew Harding (GR 1980-85)

Andrew is an award winning journalist and the BBC’s Africa correspondent, based in Johannesburg. He has been a foreign correspondent since 1991, in the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa. He is also the author of These Are Not Gentle People (which was also turned into a BBC Radio 4 series) and The Mayor of Mogadishu.

These Are Not Gentle People is a crime thriller, a courtroom drama, a profound exploration of collective guilt and individual justice, and a fast-paced literary novel. The story of the brutal beating and death of two young men and those accused of their murders. Andrew traces the impact of one moment of collective fury on a fragile community – exposing lies, cover-ups, political meddling and betrayals, and revealing the women struggling against an entrenched culture of male violence.
