We are delighted to share the fourth newsletter in our Charter Awards transformational bursary campaign, offering our community the latest reflections, stories and milestones from a programme that continues to change young lives at King’s.
This edition begins with particularly joyful news. We celebrate the success of our first ever Charter Awardee, who has now graduated from King’s with outstanding A‑levels and secured a place at one of the country’s leading art schools. You can also hear more about how King’s helps to build brilliant futures – with Bea, our current Captain of School, Baroness Kate Fall MBE, the Founding Chair of our Campaign Group, and the King’s Futures Department all sharing their reflections.
At the heart of The Charter Awards is a simple but powerful belief: that talent should never be limited by circumstance. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors, so far the Awards have opened the doors of King’s to five bright, capable young people who might otherwise never have access to it. We hope you enjoy reading more about this special campaign and thank you so much for your support!

As I prepare for a gap year travelling and (hopefully!) a place at Oxford afterwards, I couldn’t feel further from having completed some sort of linear transformation which has turned me out as a gift-wrapped product of King’s. I am completely different from my peers. King’s never tried to shape me into a particular type of person; rather it gave me the structure and support alongside independence and responsibility to grow into myself. And whilst my journey has had its ups and downs, I know that King’s has left its mark on me in the best way possible.
Yet I am acutely aware that my experience is a privilege that many talented young people simply cannot access…. Every contribution to The Charter Awards ensures that the opportunities which I have been so fortunate to experience are made accessible for pupils of different walks of life.
Bea, Captain of School
